Handmade Antique Kittinger baby cradle repro = arrgghhhhh

For the past 3 weeks, we have endured the singular joys of a man with a MISSION! Of course, this is far better than zombie-man, so we all bite our lips and feed him well.

Have you ever met a man on a MISSION? He has a particularly Tim Allen-esque approach to ~the project~. Well, to be fair, Hubby's better looking, and not near so disastrous, although I DO feel a little Al-ish from time to time, minus the flannel button down. ~ :-D.

First, lets detail the project in question ~

This is a Kittinger antique. It is a baby cradle that I suspect was more along the size of a bassinette than a true cradle. Either that or babies were a heck of a lot smaller back in the day. And of course, that is a very real possibility. Unfortunately, this is the only existing picture that we could find of said cradle, making it extremely difficult to take proportion off of it. So naturally, Hubby has a tremendous desire to make it. Something about the challenge, the hunt, the fact that the kid is now 5 weeks old and is still sleeping in a portable playpen, because (and I quote) "it took a little longer than I thought it might." ( All I can say is, my sister had better appreciate this thing, it has taken him almost 200 hours, and it isn't even stained or finished yet, that's my job, along with the custom-made cushion, waterproof cover, custom-made sheets, and hanging drapery off of the spreader bar.)

All said, the handcut dovetailed ribs, the spokeshaved basket rim, even the custom-designed bearings have not been the hold up on this piece. Believe it or not, it has been, and still is,( will post finished pics when it's done) the joinery on the legs that has been an absolute nightmare to construct with the proper amount of strength.

This design broke slightly out from the dovetailed joint FOUR times! ( hehe, WHAT"S the definition of insanity?? ;-P ).

The only thing that we can think of is that the width and depth of the dovetail is not deep enough.

These are the roughed-out finials that will hold the piece together up through the spreader bar on top.

This is the basket, spreader bar and both of the uprights.
Notice how thick the basket rim is, and how heavy the ribs look.

Now check that out! A little edging on the ribs and some well-done spoke-shaving, and of course, the endless SANDDDDDIIIIINNGGGG. Notice the lightened appearance, and the gorgeous dovetailed detailing on the ribs to rim joinery.

This is a rough version of how it will look upon completion. (obviously taken before any edging or spokshaving took place, makes a big difference, eh?)

This has been one of those staying up till 5 am for 3 weeks straight projects.
If anyone out there knows of any better joinery for the legs in this application, please DO be forthcoming ~ oh how we'll ALL grin in relief!

And now for the little ditty ~
(sing it to Mellencamp's "Little ditty 'bout Jack & Diane")

Hubby & Red

Little ditty, about Hubby & Red
2 American kids hangin out, makin a bed.
Hubby gonna be a woodworkin' star,
Red's big ideas--in Hubby's garage, right on par ~

Suckin' up paint fumes outside the garage door.
Drawing up antiques, doin' repro's, custom, and more.
Hubby say, "Hey Red, let's do a Kittinger one - off,
So what if there's only one view, hey baby, don't scoff "~

Hubby says, oh yeah life goes on
This'll be an heirloom piece,Long after you & I's gone
Say uh, oh yeah , one of a kind, Long after you & I's gone.
They work on.

Hubby sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and remakes the leg joint
"Well then there Red, why the heck ain't this workin? "
Red, she says "Baby, you been missin the point"

Hubby says oh yeah, Life goes on
This'll be an heirloom piece, Long after I'm gone
Say uh, oh yeah, Long after I'm gone.
He works on.

Gonna let it rock, let it roll
Let the bearings run true, without any pull.
Clamp down the joints, as long as you can,
Spokeshave and sanding, and carving by hand.

Oh yeah, life goes on,
this'll be an heirloom piece long after we're gone
Oh yeah, this'll be an heirloom piece long after we're gone.

Little ditty, about Hubby and Red
2 American kids just makin' a bed.

the sun is shining, & life is good

Well, spring has sprung, and I guess I should update my happenin' life every once in a while, eh.

Cool news #1 ~ hubby is now self-employed! (has been for about 3 wks now, you were right FMC, he just had to clear his head of all the corporate poopy.)

Yeah, he loves it, makes furniture in the garage, and does chainsaw carvings on the side. Cannot believe the lack of stress ~ it's a good thing, to not be totally humped up over some dorky boss who doesn't have a clue what you do to benefit the company, even if you WERE one of the original 10 employees who happened to help keep the company up and running in its first 12 yrs. ( I still harbor a bit of resentment over this action. It's dumb, because I am glad he no longer works there, but I feel like they were buttheads, and should have recognized him more. Oh well, if they had, he would still be there, I guess.)

Cool news #2 ~ I lost 7 1/2 pounds! Now, 7.5 lbs may not seem like a lot, but when you are only 5 ft nuthin, it IS a lot. I think stress DEFINITELY adds pounds, cuz I am living proof that LACK of it takes weight away.

Cool news #3 ~ School has only about 2 weeks left, and then that crazy hectic young beautiful, and all too short time known as *SUMMER* starts. I love summer. I love everything about it, even the broiling hot days. When it gets too hot, my kids and I pick out a nice long book, and head down to the basement, where I read to them in the dank cooler air down there. Sometimes, we all just take naps ( I tell them that in Mexico, everyone takes a siesta, and it's cool, so they think they are being all chicano to take a siesta in the middle of a hot day ~ :-D .)

I love putting up the pool, and running through the sprinkler and water fights and yellow yellow yellow sunshine, walking the greenbelt, and the annual ant-scapades. (You know, that tireless battle between you and hoards of ants trying to invade every crack in the sidewalk, every hole in the driveway, every little shady spot you might want to sit down in.)

I love the 4th of July ~ we have the most AWESOME fireworks show here, put on by the owner of Melaleuca ~ the dude is a little self-agrandizing, but the entire city benefits from it on the 4th of July ~ people come from 4 states around just to see it. And of course, the 4th just wouldn't be the 4th, without the parade, a huge bbq with friends and family, and staying up past midnight lighting off a whole arsenal of goodies, along with the entire neighborhood. We make up pies and everyone brings tons of icecream, and the whole neighborhood goes out in the street and lets off fireworks after the big show. Since we live close to the greenbelt, where the show is held, we just walk down to it, with all of the neighbors, but people coming from out of state and across town park literally ANYWHERE they can, and neighborhood kids set up signs in their yards and charge folks $10 just to park. Other kids will stay down at the greenbelt, peddling cans of pop or water for $1, and $1-store stuff for $5. Then you have all the lemonade stands set up, and the food vendors and such, and people go down the day before, staking their claim, stringing off huge 4-blanket-sized lots each, so they will have a ~saved~ spot for when the crowds start coming in. Neat thing about this town, too, is people respect the markers. if you didn't mark it off, you certainly don't hone in on the space.

I love being able to backpack with my hubby into some remote area, pick some of the wild berries for oatmeal in the morning, take photographs of all the beautiful things, and camp where no-one else is. I especially love the evenings and mornings of those backpacking trips, with nothing to do but sit and watch the sun go up or down, and then crawl into the tent and make a little ( or a lot ;-D) ruckus.

Cool News #4 ~ I have finally decided what to do with this blog ~ since I love photography, and I love poetry, I am going to start taking pics of things ( like the 4th of July, backpacking trips, ants, a project or two of hubby's, and maybe even a skinny butt or two) and writing something up about it, with haiku or poetry. Lately I have noticed a sad lack on my part to update my blog regularly, and it stems from a) spending too much time reading everyone else's blogs, and the b) lacking any genuine creativity because I have their blogs on my mind. So I think if I just knuckle down & post my own BEFORE looking at anyone else's, I might actually get a few more posts in. It's just so tempting to immediately check everyone else's blogs, and then forget my own. :-D

ARRGGGHH matey

Well, so i've been largely unavailable this last little bit. Ridiculously so, in fact. HOWEVER, all in a good cause. My dear SWEET sister just gave birth to the CUTEST little boy ever, (it's all relative, my kids are cuter, but not by much, ;-D), let's see, vitals are 8 lbs, 2 oz., 19 1/2" long, and with some seroious vitality. He really is SOOO cute, here is a pic of him.

At any rate, since she had to have a c-section, I have been in Utah, helping her out. Thus, I have been away from my computer. That always rips, as I finally got on line today, and realized I had about a bazillion emails to sort through, and etc....

At any rate, since I am on her laptop, and its about out of power, I will have to make this a quicky, just thought I had best let all know that indeed, I am still alive and kicking, lol.

Here is is his picture, you can see why I have been off helping her out ~ ;-D ~ And actually, she helped me out when each of my children were born, so you know.. it's a grand excuse to get to go play for a month......

Fabric of Life

It's strange, how people can be connected in different ways ~ as though life is a never-ending loom of fabric, with each tiny weft and weave contributing to the wholeness and value of the cloth itself ~

some people are bright swatches of color, little external embroideries, bright sequins or beads.

Some are the strong supporting silk threads underneath and throughout, not really seen , but so very necessary to the fabric as a whole.

Some are the thick strong weft threads, that help hold the shape and density; some are the warp, thinner, weaving in and out, creating myriad patterns through-out, both over and under.

Some create a fanciful border, making the edges beautiful and rich, while some prefer to be center stage, smack in the middle of the piece ~ a dazzling center-piece, for all to admire. Still others prefer to travel all about the fabric, surfacing a little here, a little there, leaving color and design wherever they go.

Each thread has a purpose, each thread contributes to the whole. Whether the piece be tiny, and barely visible, or bright, loud, and overbearing in places, still each is a part of the whole tapestry. Each thread gives color, depth, strength, thickness, warmth, value, class, or beauty. Each thread is beautiful and necessary, however short or long it be. Each thread belongs to the whole. Each thread matters. Together, each thread forms a length of fabric that could not have otherwise been.

Guess What? Chicken Butt!

~See how enthused I am? :-D
Well, ya'all, I am SOOOO enthused ~ beCAUSE, I have finally finally FINALLY gotten my other weblog/site/whatever you want to call it UP & semi-RUNNING! Hah-HAH! And THAT, my fair friends, is a big deal.

Therefore, I celebrated hugely, and treated myself to a small reward or three. Naturally, I still have much work to finish, however, the fact that my squinty little brain was able to accomplish even THIS much is quite a cause for celebrating.

Indeed, I believe the moment calls for a haiku:

Exquisite Indulgence
The hours slip away
yet the journey gives pleasure
exquisite results.

Winter DOES have a silver lining!

Here are some lovely mementos of the colder season. These are, in my mind, the silver lined lemonades of winter:

<<~~(I think that is really a sculpture ~ if not, well, perhaps a timely example of what can happen if you indulge a touch over the holidays ~ ;-D )

and THIS final thought on winter, snow and ice:

Spring Haiku

Spring

the sun rises up
to greet the new day once more,
fresh, cocksure again.

A bird sings sweetly
the joyous descant to life;
gracious little friend.

Icy waters run clear,
the sun has banished cold and
Ever-present snow

Soon the buds unfurl
revealing delicate life
awakening now

Haiku heaven ~

Well well well ~ Another day, another day ~ here is my offering du jour ~

Haiku to gray

Snow falls ever lightly
gray shadows cast all about
faerie drifts abound

Haiku to sunshine

sunshine brings green life
the crocus dares peak out of
frosted coverlets.

Life

is life worth living
when dark clouds hover
and joys cease to be

Empty

The hole grows larger
emptiness in triplicate
a vast abyss now

Eensy weensy spider crawled out the rose petal

Doc Maroon, here is that wee spider pic, as well as a few others. Hope you all enjoy them.
Macro-photography has been one of my interests from time to time, so if you all like them, perhaps I might post a few more here and there, eh?

Also, if you click on the pics, you will get a larger version, which look better, in my humblest of opinions ~

more macro shots... Roses by any other name

This is a day lily I caught on its way out ~ I love the hot fiery colors and the perfection of layout ~ Who but God could create something so lovely? (yes, El B, I am Christian, hate me if you must, it's ok, I'll still love your hairy little heart ~ ;-P)

Here is a tiny green spider, living in the petals of a rose ~ sort of romantic, isn't it? And yet, I bet he's dead now, since the frost came, and the roses are gone ~ the cycle of life must include death, even for little creatures like him.

I love the way the light refracts off of these natural lavender pearls ~ so many oysters worked so hard to make these~Here's a quicky little note of interest ~ a great way to tell if a pearl is real or not ~ rub it on your teeth, if it slides, its a fake-a-roony, if it's sorta gritty feeling, it's REAL. That gritty feeling comes from a whole bunch of little micro-crystalline structures, which is what makes up the nacre of the pearl, and that's what makes it so pretty, and full of luster. And of course, real pearls are cool, cuz they came from a living animal, and in fact, only oysters can make that nacre, man still hasn't figured it out. ( Well, hey, what do we need to figure it out for if we can get oysters to do it for us, double time?) Did you know that some oysters can produce up to 60 pearls at a time? Course, it takes a while, but when they are done, there's a load of them! Pretty cool huh? That's why I have a nasty little pearl addiction too! ;-D

Wisdom

My post today is very simple. I decided to go ahead and include one of my real poems, just to see what ya'all thought.

Wisdom

A book in a woman's hands
is a beautiful thing to see ~
a lady reading nightly
to a child at her knee.

Teaching generations
of scholars yet to come,
the joy of forever learning ~
ne'er beneath an ignorant thumb.

For in that child's eyes
is the light of yesteryear,
the joy of present tales,
and the promise of futures near.

And the hopes that there are fostered,
and the vision that is seen
by the child nightly kneeling
makes the woman a royal queen.

For she bestows the love
of adventure, knowledge and light
upon that kneeling child,
each and every night.

Ode To a New Year

WEEELLLLLL, it's been a bit since I took up the blog, I must admit. This whole holiday thingy does have it's definite downside..... one DOES get enTIREly busy. However, since it's all in fun, what the heck, eh?

Basically, I have spent a disgusting amount of time playing this Xbox snowboarding game called Amped2. Other than that, I also finished a chest (YEAHHHHHH RAHHH - WA- ROONey!!) that my husband has built some time ago, which was a HUGEE deal! Yes, I know, how annoying to have to read so dang many !!'s !! ;-D It makes it seems as though some Botox-injected female with high plucked eyebrows and gi-NORM-ous teeth is standing there yelling out in a smily voice 24/7.

I know. I am not immune to that impression. But still, YEAAAHH!!!
I AM happy to have finished that sucker. It has 4 main compartments, a drawer, ( in the base) and also 4 secret compartments, and is made out of walnut & alder, stained in clear coat, to enhance the wood grain. I'll take some pics and post it on here someday soon ( maybe tomorrow, but I wouldn't bet on it, I never was one for schedules).

At any rate, I also spent an inordinate amount of time making those blasted ~goodie trays~ up. You know, the ones with 30 bazillion different kinds of holiday sugar bomb infested delicacies, meant to let everyone know what a diverse & talented cook you are ( too bad it only comes around once a yr, AND you only get one little piece of each thing...not to mention the fact that each tiny morsel is destined to hang off your left hip and inner right thigh in a MOST unbecoming fashion for the next 7 yrs..... yah, too bad about THAT).

And then there is always the wrapping.. did you ever think to yourself at 4 am Christmas morning that truly wrapping paper is one of the biggest dupes out there for these joyous holiday events? You spend all stinkin' NIGHT wrapping those little gifts up, for the delight and thrills of youthful hearts, only to have it ripped off in 2 seconds flat, no 2nd thoughts ( nay, narry a FIRST thought!!) about it... I dunno, call me slightly jaded...

However, I WILL say this ~
It does me ol' 'eart good to see me wee little babes shriekin' with such joy an 'appiness come 5:15 in the blessed morn....

all right all right, so I suck at accents ( little kids don't know this , however, you can tell them the worst cockney/irish/scottish/aussie/kiwi mixture of accents is STRAIGHT ITALIAN, they don't have a clue...)

HAHAHHH! Guess what ELSE??? I ALSO got some more jewelry finished, got MOST of the way done painting my son's bedroom, AND went to the dentist! Woo hoo!!
Bet yah didn't know my life was so full of thrills, chills, and heavy spills, eh?

I heard SOME people got to go SKIING over the break.. lucky dogs...( doc E, I believe that was you ~ I am so jealous, I can TASTE IT!) And a whole BUTT-LOAD of you all got steaming SMASHED ~ not so jealous there, I like to know what business I am up too,, hehehe BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahhhh....

So, all in all, it was a great holiday, with some tedium, some fun, and some serious couch potato moments.

NOW ~ for the New Year, I decided I ought to make up a few resolutions, since that seems to be the whole OBJECT of even bothering to NOTATE a ~new~ year.. well, to me , anyway...
so here goes:

Ode To A New Year

O Joy, tis New Year's Day again,
When I am fat, but whist be thin~
When all those projects, new & old
Rear their ugly heads so bold

And cry repentance to mine ear
~O Foolish woman,Come hither near!
Draw close and see what has been cast
to lie in dusty bins at last

Those scrap book scraps, and pictures too
The stickery things and hardened glue,
The mounds of cloth & spools of thread
piled up the ceiling, towering o'er my head.

The bitty beads and pretty pearls,
paper dolls, and little girls,
baby clothes, and blanket flannel
a piece of sheetrock and an old wood panel,

That savings account I've overdrawn,
the leaves still gracing my snowy lawn,
the window upstairs that just got broken
That fire that constantly needs a stokin',

The other bedroom I never painted,
the grandmother I promised to get be-Sainted,
the rings I was supposed to put on Ebay,
The blogs I shoulda wrote every day,

that extra 10 pounds hanging off my left cheek,
the laundry I put off for nigh unto 3 weeks,
the cat pan, full of piles & clumps,
That dang water heater that ought be at the dump,

These are things that haunt me anew
the resolutions of yesteryear,
begging me to still do,

And now I need new ones,
New goals to achieve,
Cuz the old ones sucked badly,
I do believe.

Unfortunately, there's a small stipulation,
My brain's hanging on to the old computation,

It's positive that I've gained something new~
A whole DANG new Year with a Butt-Load to do!

:-D

Merry Christmas!

Well, dang it all anyway.... I have this lovely little Christmas poem going on in the back of my head, but I can't stop long enough to put it down... so I'm gonna do the time honored classic ~

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
& Happy New Year!!!!

Another lousy poetic moment best left in the annals of history for other experimental poets

Well, I think it's plain to see that poetry can be both beneficial AND detrimental, all in one fell swoop. Thanks to my previous heinous examples, no-one in HISTORY need repeat my haiku-limeric meshing experiments. See? I have already left my feeble mark on mankind. O Joy~ Strange, I think i feel another taste of poetry at my lips.
Oh dear. I believe I shall take a small break, come back with some hot chicken & rice soup, and see if I can swoosh that taste right outta my mouth.

Oh Dear ~
It isn't going away.

Mighty tasty soup, though. hmmmmmm

I know a place wherein resides
a well-placed poem, & besides,
some haiku-limeric mess derides.

O Constant Poem rule divine,
If I seek thee not, I am bovine,
therefore here-after I shall be thine.

I'll falter not, and recklessly rhyme,
nay, nay, I say, ~Pendamic Time~
From here on out, O Thee I'll mime.

For who can say of those wise old fathers
that made up poem rules bothers
to lift the chaos souls of others.

For from continent to continent
those poem styles seem quite content
to stand alone & represent.

So I suppose, in the end,
Unless I Deaf to be pretend,
I cannot mesh them without end.

And thus this little poem goes,
and yes it warms me to my toes,
oh hang it.... that's the soup, I knows.

Saturday, November 12, 2005

I advise against poetic meshing ~ it leads to sad messes, pathetic attempts at that new ~chaos theory~

OOOHHH BBEEAAAUUTTIIFFULLL for SPPAAAYYYYY-shus skies.....all righty then, boys and girls, old ladies and pandering males of all ages ~ GUESS WHATTTTT???? Oh HALLL-AAAYYYYY- LOOOOOO- YAh! The fall carnival is over, the fall carnival is over, weee-haa! Yayyyy RAH! Go ME! And my fundraising chair! Especially her! she ROCKETH, my friends, she truly ROCKETH!! WWWAAHOOOOOOOOOO! All right ~ well, wow-ee-ka-zow-eee ~ cuz yah see, THAT was a MAJOR deal, and now it is OVER. We had a HUGE turn-out, and made thousands of dinero's y peso's me amigos! Which is TRES BON, tre bon! AND, we got coverage on our local tv channel AND newspaper!! YEAAAHHHHHHH! PTO lives again ~

Ok, so, there resides in all of us a touch of suburbia, and lo & behold, it hath reared it's mundane head, roared it's mighty roar, and consumed it's pithy members. Now the only major events left of this year is our Scholastic Book Fair and the Dec. Teacher Appreciation Dinner. And I love the book fair ~ I get to pick out my favorite books, and dress up and go read them to the kids with ~accents~.
This may just call for a pithy, mundane suburbia-ish haiku... I seem to be haiku-ing a lot lately. Perhaps a limeric. Perhaps a haiku-ish limeric, or a limeric-ish haiku...

Here, the PTO,
Asking for your money-O
Hand out-stretch'd for-e'er.

Begging Happily,
Adding funds to school coffers
Taking all offers.

Happy are we-O
Off to the school we go-O
Singing Merrily.

The Staff loves us So,
We bring them donuts-O-O
This Haiku sucketh!

Ok, so, maybe that's why poets of old never bothered to mesh those two styles. I can see it was an utter fiasco. However, I must leave these sad examples here for future poets who may have similar dis-illusioned plans of mesh-ment.
Don't do it, I say, don't be tempted by the dark side of chaos poetry. It's all a bitter LIE.. ALAS, there must be SOME rules, or you TOO will end up with poopy for poetry. (check out that illiteration, I may be tempted that way as well some day)
Ah me, ah me.

Well THAT sucked ~ Haiku to my computer & the sucky battery

Maann, I am SO bummed! I wrote up a whole blog on my new laptop, and the battery hadn't charged the whole way, so it was plugged in, and the plug came out, and as a result, I LOST it ALL, because i didn't have it saved~ AARRGGGGGGHHHHHH, what IRRITATION! This irritation is worse than a butt-rash caused by over-zelous use of Charmin, folks. This irritation surpasses a nasty case of scaby-infested, swollen, allergy-ridden misery. In fact, this irritation borders on the down right spiced-curry-Kashmiri Dum Aloo effects coupled with IBS on a sweaty hot day in the middle of August!
AAARRGGHHHHH ~ the blue screen of death has heard me woeful cries, and it does not answer. Tears drop on the $200+ piece of living plastic now reduced to stone.
My naval umbilical to the www has been severed and hung to dry in the winds of ~unsaved data~.
My commemorating haiku ~

In the wind flutters
my data. Say goodbye to
the last three hours.

fear not, O Blogger,
all is not lost as of yet ~
you are still breathing.

The Noh of Data Death
has once again removed
all traces of thought.

Upon retrospect
I have wasted more time on
less important things.

Like writing haiku
to recall poor habits of
battery usage.

Prelude to a blog or ~Oh Vote, my people, VOTE!~

All right, It is 1:40 am. Later on this morning, I am going to go down to the school ( from 7 am to 9 pm) & help out with the whole elections deal. This is my first time doing it, and I am pretty sure it's gonna be a *Greyhound Bus* moment. You know what I mean, all the strangest people in the world, collected before you, in this one little moment in time. When I get done, it's gonna be a ~Sit-&-watch-all-the-funny-people-go-by~ EXTRAVAGANZA! I'm even gonna take notes. So when you go to vote tomorrow, know that I am sitting there, watching you all file past me, taking notes on your strangeness, all for my future blogging pleasure. And you know what? I am HAPPY to perform this little *civil service*. :-D See yah all in a few hours!!!
