polyacrylamides Science Fun (or gushy colored diaper crystals )

Yup, that's right ~ our science experiment was all about gushy diaper crystals! Of course, we don't have anyone in diapers anymore, so we just went to the store and got a bunch of these little science experiment kits, and they were cooler, anyway, cuz they were COLORED in bright pink, orange, blue & yellow.

Izzy presented the science experiment, ( dig his funky whiteboard drawings! ;-D)

everyone had fun *growing* them,

& we learned that polyacrylamides can get REALLY BIG!!!
See that little petri dish the crystals are all crowded into in this pic? Well, Kat took 2 out and put them in their own little petri dish, and decided she wanted to ~feed the monster~, and see just how BIG they really COULD get!

And here they are, one day later, EEWWWAALLGHHH!!

They really ARE gushy!
And to think I was changing my kids' diapers every two or three hours! I CLEARLY could have gotten at LEAST 3 days longer in them ~ those puppies suck up some SERIOUS moisture!

Eeewwwwww! LOL! That is quite an experiment! I remember those diaper things. Of course I remember the ones that were colored yellow. Yick! :-p

Your kids look like they are having fun! And I cannot believe how big those pink ones got! Brave girl to "feed the monster" like that and think outside the box ;)

We did this experiment in June, but we didn't keep feeding them. I had no idea they would get that big!

Those colours are great, but did the experiment teach you anything about chemistry?

lawanda ~ I remember the yellow ones too, especially after the dog would rip them open for all to see ~ sicks me out just to think about it! And those pink ones are even BIGGER today ~ uugghhh (feeedddd meee seymoure, FEEEEDDD MMEEE) :-D

Carrie ~ thank you for stopping by! Snasty little jelly things, aren't they? :-D

GB~ Actually, they DID learn about chemistry, and such (you know, take notes, observations, chemical make-up, dry vs. wet, viewed under a microscope, etc, I just didn't think that part was bloggable fun ~ maybe I should blog detail from time to time, so that people don't get the wrong idea about the education my children are recieving ~ of course, I don't base much on public opinion anyway, or else I never would have turned to homeschooling in the first place. But you know that ~ it's the feisty redhead thing. Why, even gorillas must step aside once in a while whilst the females squeal & chest-pound. ;-D)

i don't understand why these are diaper crystals.... can i just put them near my child's rear and she can go 'diaper free' like I thought I could do (remember 'elimination communication...?) ; )
